Storage Guidelines

Proper storage is essential to maintaining the stability and integrity of research peptides. Because these compounds can be sensitive to temperature, moisture, and light, following correct laboratory storage practice helps preserve their quality for the duration of your research.

Storing lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides

Peptides are supplied in lyophilised (powder) form, which is their most stable state. Before reconstitution:

  • Short term (days to a few weeks): Store at 2-8 °C in a standard laboratory refrigerator, away from light.
  • Long term (weeks to months): Store at −20 °C. For extended storage, −80 °C is preferable.
  • Keep vials tightly sealed and protected from moisture. Repeated exposure to humid air can degrade the compound.
  • Store away from direct light and heat sources at all times.

Lyophilised material kept frozen and sealed generally retains stability for extended periods when handled correctly.

Allow vials to reach room temperature before opening

When removing a vial from cold storage, allow it to warm to room temperature before opening. Opening a cold vial exposes the contents to condensation, and moisture is one of the fastest routes to degradation. Letting the vial equilibrate first minimises this risk.

Storing reconstituted peptides

Once a peptide has been reconstituted, its stability is reduced and it must be stored cold:

  • Store reconstituted solutions at 2-8 °C and use within a limited working window.
  • Do not leave solutions at room temperature for extended periods.
  • Handle solutions gently. Avoid vigorous shaking, which can cause foaming and may damage the peptide structure; swirl or roll the vial instead.

Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles

Each freeze-thaw cycle places stress on peptide molecules and can accelerate degradation. To minimise this:

  • Prepare and store solutions in single-use aliquots rather than repeatedly freezing and thawing one container.
  • Label each aliquot clearly with the compound name, concentration, and date.
  • Thaw only what you need for a given experiment.

General best practice

  • Keep all products clearly labelled and logged, including receipt and reconstitution dates.
  • Protect all material from light, heat, and humidity throughout storage and handling.
  • Follow your institution’s standard operating procedures and good laboratory practice at all times.
  • Dispose of unused materials in accordance with applicable local and national regulations.

Handling on arrival

Peptides may occasionally arrive warm to the touch after transit. Because lyophilised peptides are stable and are shipped in this robust powder form, brief exposure to ambient temperatures during shipping does not typically affect their integrity. On receipt, transfer products to appropriate cold storage as described above as soon as practical.
